Play Classes

The Signing Smart™ Tots' infant & toddler sign language Play Class Series provides a playful environment where parents or caregivers and their hearing children learn American Sign Language (ASL) signs and research-proven Signing Smart™ Strategies while playing and interacting together. Activities include gross motor play, large and small group interactions, reading, singing, and much more! The classes are great for families new to baby signing as well as for those who have already started signing with their baby or toddler. Come enjoy fun and engaging developmentally-based activities that foster intimacy and communication between babies and toddlers and their parents. More than simply teaching "routine" signs, the classes are full of both useful signs as well as ones that are most motivating to your child.

Activities are structured to facilitate both linguistic and cognitive development, building up children's conceptual understanding, memory, and vocabulary. You will learn the Signing Smart™ Start as well as how many and which signs to use throughout your signing journey. You will also learn Signing Smart™ Interaction Strategies, how to bring signs into your child's world, and how to recognize and respond to your child's early signs, making baby sign language a simple, fun, and successful addition to your day. To top it off, you will learn relevant developmental information related to sign, word, cognitive, and emotional development-all while playing and interacting!

Beginner Play Classes

Parents/caregivers and their babies will learn signs in the context of songs, games and age-appropriate activities.  I also introduce Signing Smart™ strategies and information about signing with your baby during each class so that when you leave the class you can continue signing with your little one at home easily and successfully.  Usually by the end of the Play Class session all of the babies are signing and mom (and dad or grandma or auntie, etc.) have been introduced to well over 100 American Sign Language signs while having fun with their little one.  They are not just sing and sign classes, but are an opportunity to interact with your baby in positive and enriching ways that encourage not only their signing, but also their cognitive, social, emotional, and linguistic development!  The classes are geared toward children 6-24mths. of age, but children younger or older than that can attend.  If you have questions about ages just drop me an email or call me and I can discuss that with you.

Intermediate Play Classes

Parents/caregivers and their babies will learn signs in the context of songs, games and age-appropriate activities.  I also will introduce new Signing Smart™ strategies and info for signing with your child during each class so that when you leave the class you can continue signing with your little one at home easily and successfully.  The Intermediate Class Strategy Sessions will focus a lot on using signs to highlight spoken language acquisition, helping your child to understand more abstract concepts, and encouraging literacy and learning through signs.  Babies and their parents (or grandma or auntie, etc.) will be introduced to another 100+ American Sign Language signs while having fun with their little one. The guidelines for Intermediate Play Classes are that your baby is 12-24 mths. of age and using a minimum of 5-10 signs.  There is a fair amount of pretend play as well as learning of more abstract concepts in the Intermediate class so if your baby is under 12 mths. of age, even if they are using more than 5-10 signs, it is still best for you and for them to reinforce the signs and strategies covered in the Beginner Play Class series by taking (or retaking) the Beginner Play Class session.  You and your baby are welcome to take whichever class you like though as these are guidelines only and if you have any questions about what class would fit your baby best please contact me.

Don't forget aunts, uncles, grandparents, older siblings and other family members.  Signing Smart™ Tots encourages families to sign, learn and play together in class!
