I
attended a Signing Smart™ Tots'
Workshop when Sabrina was almost 5 months. Both my husband and I found
it easy to utilize the strategies for teaching and using sign language
within our every day routine.
They say that most babies under 6 months, will start signing back
around 6-8 months. So we were super excited
when Sabrina signed HAT
(because her daddy was wearing her hat).
Though she is not signing back often, we do find using sign language
useful in communicating to her in a consistent manner - therefore she
knows what the signs for "Eat", "Milk", "All Done" and "Sleep" mean
and reacts accordingly.
Thank you for getting us started on this awesome journey of
communicating with our baby. Looking forward to attending the
Support
Groups and
Play Classes.

...and here is an update from Sabrina's mom 10 months later...
Now at
16-months-old our daughter uses over 30 different signs and it truly
helps us divert potential "tantrum" situations. We are
constantly told by her caregivers that they are amazed at how well she
can indicate what she wants and what she is thinking about via
signing.
We have also found
that signing has helped us teach her about more complicated concepts
like feelings and words that sound the same but have different meaning
like "toothbrush" vs. "hairbrush". Thanks Wendy!
