I attended a Signing Smart™ Tots' Workshop when Sabrina was almost 5 months. Both my husband and I found it easy to utilize the strategies for teaching and using sign language within our every day routine.

They say that most babies under 6 months, will start signing back around 6-8 months. So we were super excited when Sabrina signed HAT (because her daddy was wearing her hat).

Though she is not signing back often, we do find using sign language useful in communicating to her in a consistent manner - therefore she knows what the signs for "Eat", "Milk", "All Done" and "Sleep" mean and reacts accordingly.

Thank you for getting us started on this awesome journey of communicating with our baby. Looking forward to attending the Support Groups and Play Classes.

...and here is an update from Sabrina's mom 10 months later...

Now at 16-months-old our daughter uses over 30 different signs and it truly helps us divert potential "tantrum" situations.  We are constantly told by her caregivers that they are amazed at how well she can indicate what she wants and what she is thinking about via signing.

We have also found that signing has helped us teach her about more complicated concepts like feelings and words that sound the same but have different meaning like "toothbrush" vs. "hairbrush".  Thanks Wendy!

I have been signing with my son since he was about 5-months-old or so.  We started with the basic signs and around 10-11 mos. we were shocked to see all the signs he was doing back to us.  We took the Signing Smart™ workshop with Wendy Hagerty as a staff workshop at our school and have been signing with the babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers now for quite some time. It is amazing to see what the children can show you and tell you through their use of signs. It has decreased aggression amongst the toddler age children and it has given them a venue for communication. The workshop gave us a deeper insight on ideas and specifics when signing and helpful hints about signing familiar objects to the children. Plus we are all using the same signs throughout the school and are showing/telling the parents which signs we are working on with the children so that they may follow through with the same consistency at home. A wonderful program!  I would highly recommend this workshop to all child care settings, schools and private centers who wish to provide an awesome communication tool to all those children enrolled!

Erin is 16 months old and I started writing down all of the signs that she knows and uses every day. So far I am at 52 and every day I see more.  We were outside playing the other day and she noticed a bird bath in the neighbours' yard and asked me what it was. I told her it was a bird bath. She signed "bird" and "bath" back to me showing me that she understood what this new object was and what it was used for. She does two and three sign combinations all the time. When she needs help she signs "help" and "please".  I started signing with her when she was 6 months old and it has been nothing but benefical to us.  Her vocabulary is so advanced and she loves to be included in the conversations.  Thank you so much for getting us involved!

"What" is it Mom? - 16 mths.

One day Nathan had thrown his ball over the baby gate. I could hear him getting frustrated but he was out of sight at the door to my daughter's room. When suddenly, it was as if a little light came on and he realized 'Hey, I know how to fix this. I have the tools to ask Mommy for help.' Nathan stopped crying, came around the corner and signed, "Mom - ball - help". In my family I have noticed that as my pre-verbal children develop their sign language vocabulary, the amount of frustration and tantrums decrease. I highly recommend this program and Wendy especially, to begin your journey into the world of sign!
